Its 1962. Baltimores Tracy Turnblad a girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has won a spot on The Corny Collins Show. Her sole passion in life to dance is turned into a dream come true. Overnight, the voluptuous Tracy is transformed from being a lonely outsider into a dazzling dancer.
Hairspray the musical, which opened at the end of October, is based on the film Hairspray. Heres what the critics said:
the musical Hairspray which originated from John Waterss 1988 film, arrives in the capital on a wave of momentum, which, happily, explodes onto the Shaftesbury stage in a two-and-a-half hour package of dazzling colour, funky moves, head-infesting music and a feelgood storyline of one girls mission to change the world.

But the performances, in Jack O'Brien's deliciously fluid production, underline the show's basic benevolence. Leanne Jones is a remarkable Tracy with a talent as high and wide as her scooped-up hair.

Packed full of energy and humour (hoorah! a proper musical!), the show lifted the spirits of everyone in the party.

The show is just as fantastic as the vast majority of critics have said. I've been a MB fan for many years, and you really do forget it's him: his acting is so convincing. He's obviously having a whale of a time. Leanne is a breath of fresh air, and Ben is way better than I expected as Link - the role could have been made for him.In fact the whole cast are so full of fun and vitality it's astounding. Not a weak link amongst them. My face ached with smiling and laughing for so long. A real feel good show that leaves you feeling so much better by the end than you did on entering!

I have seen the show three times including the first preview and hard to believe but it gets better each time.
All the cast are exceptionally talented and not one weak *link* there. To quote Dame Dench *It is not often you can say that about a show*!
Visually it is stunning yet still gets a social message across.
If you are feeling depressed, forget pills, forget therapy, Just go and see this show!!
