Ross Noble
VUE Cinema
21st October 2007
Review by Katie Spain
I first saw Ross Noble at the Fringe festival in my hometown in Australia. At the time, his hair was bright blue and he spent the large part of the evening hassling my poor old grandma. She took it on the chin but when he suggested she was an alien sent down from outer space (riding on a walnut) she gave him a piece of her mind.
Hes had a special place in my comedy heart ever since and I welcomed the chance to see him again, ten years later in London with excitement. Ross now lives in Australia with his Aussie wife for half the year and returns to his UK homeland to tour. This was no normal gig though. The audience at Leicester Squares VUE cinema were there to watch a live stream of Nobles 2007 'Nobleism' show from Liverpool. I doubted whether technology could transmit the full power of a Ross Noble joke but I neednt have worried my cheeks still hurt from the laughter. The mascara marks still stain my face and I let out a chuckle when I think of surfers, bins, afro wigs, STDs (yes, really) and Barry. You guessed it, you had to be there.
Ive never had the fortune of visiting Liverpool and I dont think I want to. Noble made them sound like the almighty owners of the Aqua-submarine (or whatever they call those floating bus thingys) whilst simultaneously side-swiping Blackpool, Manchester and England in general. So many wide verbal swoops in one fast-paced evening. The thing with Ross Noble is; hes so damn funny its endearing. This was comedy genius of the best variety. Nothing malicious just good (I cant say clean) fun and an imagination thatd give a four-year-old a run for his money.
Noble thinks as he walks, he talks before he processes the data and sprays the audience with verbal diarrhea. We followed him on a journey through venereal diseases, bedroom antics, Australians and owls; in no particular order.
We werent in the building and yet Noble included us. A mobile phone game of ask Ross a question simultaneously made VUE theatre crowds hit speed dial and hope like hell theyd get in first. Who needs dodgy television competitions when you can bypass technology and play phone tag?
Ross used his customary forte of animated actions and spiraling thought processes to tell a series of stories at one time. Props kept the show moving and as usual, a mix of heckle and pit stops got between him and the punch line. The lady in the front row may not have returned to her seat, but the rest of us were transfixed. Even the lady in the top row did just the right amount of heckling. The world now knows she pissed in a bucket at Ross last show but it made us laugh and thats all that matters.
This show shouldnt have made sense we should have walked out dripping with perspiration tired after chasing Nobles thoughts across the stage. Somehow, in amongst the madness, it all made perfect sense. Release the child inside and catch Ross noble live. Itll be the most mind enhancing evening of the year.
