Sing-along-in-London

The average London commute is a lonely affair. The rustle of newspapers and slow drawn out sighs of commuters is the only noise we usually hear as we make the long trek home. People don't talk to each other much - and if anyone offers more than a short sentence, they're typically looked at like they're an escaped mental patient.
An outburst of song is a rare thing on the streets of London too. I've only ever heard a random group of strangers unite in song twice. Once at the Spamalot Coconut Orchestra at Trafalgar Square and once in MacDonald's in Oxford Street when an intoxicated woman launched into a rendition of 'Say A Little Prayer'. Everyone in the building dropped their burgers and joined her in a rousing chorus (almost as good as the one in the film 'My Best Friend's Wedding). It made us all happy and is one of my favourite London memories.
BUT it doesn't happen often... which is why theatre-land's recent news is music to my ears.
The Royal Opera House and the London Coliseum are taking part in an initiative to get London singing. The idea is simple... Sing London is a ten-day event held from 29 June-8 July aimed solely at uniting the people of London through shared song.
I'm not talking an impromptu Opera in a kebab shop... nope, there are 100 events scheduled in places such as cafes, museums, shops, libraries and London buses. Some of the other highlights are as follows:
- Mass sing-along to the opera Tosca
The Royal Opera House is inviting anyone who likes to sing to Canada Square, Canary Warf on 3 July at 18:00. Following the 45-minute singing session people will see a live broadcast of that nights performance of Tosca by the Royal Opera, beamed straight from Covent Garden as part of BP Summer Big Screens.
- Dress Circle is hosting a Sing Along Musicals from on Saturday 7th July 2007. Sister Mary McArthur, fresh from a sell out run at Jermyn Street will be hosting the event. Debbie Saloman will be joining in the fun. The cast and puppets from Avenue Q, who will be appearing between 3.00pm and 4.00pm. They're a charming (albeit furry) bunch.
For more info on the other events (think Motown singing at The City Inn, Gareth Malone from BBC2s The Choir leading a sing-along at The Museum of London, and Fame Academys David and Carrie Grant at the Science Museum) visit www.singlondon.org
