Just when you thought your CD collection couldn't get any more eclectic, some of the world's biggest theatre stars go out and record a brand new version of the 1984 recording of West Side Story. Look out Rihannon - there's a new package of hits set to blow your Umbrella off the charts.
If you've not heard of the musical, you must have been hiding in an igloo in the Antarctic for the past fifty years. West Side Story is one of the most famous musicals ever written. The story is loosely based on Romeo and Juliet and for this reason, is one of the few musicals that never age. In this 50th anniversary year of the musical, UCJ has assembled some of the biggest classical crossover stars to record a brand new glitzy version of the musical.
In this recorded version, the part of Maria is performed by Kiwi Hayley Westenra who pairs up with Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo. Other stars include reality TV star Connie Fisher and Melanie Marshall (currently playing the lead in Porgy and Bess).
Big names and a big play list - whip that out at your next dinner party and watch them "ooh" and "ah" at your fine creative taste.
