It opened with success at the Tricycle Theatre only last week but tragedy has struck the 'Spice Drum Beat - Ghoema' production.
Co-creator Taliep Petersen was murdered on Saturday night in Athlone, Cape Town. The 56-year-old was allegedly at home when his house was robbed and he was shot in the head. Meanwhile, the rest of his family his family were locked in rooms in the house.
The musician, theatre star and TV personality studied in the UK worked with Spice Drum Beat co-creator David Kramer since the 1980s. His many musicals were successful world-wide and both on Broadway and in the West End.
Barely one week after attending the opening of the show in London, this is a tragic end for such a loved and respected man. He told the stories of slavery and injustice of South African history and through these stories, brought hope and unity to the people. May his legacy live on through performance.
