All decent witches need a break and Idina Menzel is no exception. Anyone who has seen the West End production of Wicked: The untold Story of the Wizard of Oz will know that Menzel quite literally soars in the role of Elphaba.
I worked quite closely with some of the cast in the lead up to the London premiere of Wicked and when creating a blog for the production it soon became clear that serious Wicked fans aren't just obsessed by Idina Menzel - they worship the air she flies on.
Even former Broadway stars like Menzel need to take time out to wash the green paint out of their pores. So, throughout January Kerry Ellis will take her place on stage...
Ellis is well accustomed to the witchy ways of Elphaba after understudying the role since September. The rest of the cast stay on so expect a lot more from Helen Dallimore, Australian hottie Adam Garcia, Miriam Margolyes, Nigel Planer, Martin Ball (the talking goat), James Gillan and Katie Rowley Jones.
If you haven't seen Wicked it's well worth a trip to the Apollo Victoria. Over 250,000 people have already seen the London production and you've got until 30 June 2007 to secure your own butt with a seat.
The musical takes West End theatregoers behind the scenes of the magical world of Oz. Forget Dorothy and the ruby red slippers, the main characters in this story are college friends Glinda the Good and Elpheba, a kind hearted girl who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. You'll be treated to song, dance and even the odd flying monkey or two. If your heart isn't soaring when you walk out of the theatre, perhaps it's because you accidentally walked into the wrong one.
