Word on the street: What does the 'Joe public' think of the shows out there...?
Guest reviewer: Joe Cohen
We've all seen the ads that reprint reviews saying "I never laughed so hard" or "I laughed, I cried, I wet myself!" Last night's performance of Avenue Q was the longest sustained period of laughing since my brother got pushed in the dolphin tank at Seaworld when I was nine (which coincidentially is the subject of one of the show's tunes).
Maybe because I'm American and grew up with Sesame Street or maybe because I'm sicker than most (which I doubt) I found Avenue Q to be upbeat, funny and completely entertaining. The concept is a two-hour musical based on puppets who swear, fuck and love internet porn.
The show opens with "It sucks to be me" in which the characters compete for the worst life of all which is vaguely competitive until we learn the handy man is Gary Coleman...
The show's thin storyline of recent university grad Princeton trying to find his "purpose" in life continues with the tunes:
* If you were gay
* Everyone's a little bit racist
* The internet is for porn
* You can be as loud as the hell you want (when you're having sex)
* The more you ruv someone (sung by Japanese Christmas Eve)
* Schaudenfreude
"It's German for "happiness at the misfortune of others!"
"Happiness at the misfortune of others." That is German!
- Watching a vegetarian being told she just ate chicken
The show ends with "For Now" as in:
Don't stress, Relax, Let life roll off your backs..
Except for death and paying taxes.
Everything in life is only for now!
Only for now! (Sex!)
Is only for now! (Your hair!)
Is only for now! (George Bush!)
Is only for now!
For now (or then) it was lot's of fun.
